In the Netherlands, no less than 14,900 cases of 'cybercrime' were reported to the police in 2021.
That's an increase of more than 300% compared to 2019!
And we haven't reached the 'top' yet....
These hard figures emerged during this research by the specialized site cybercrimeinfo.nl.
Part of the increase can surely be explained from an increase in the number of reports thanks to the strict legislative framework of GDPR.
But that is of course only a small part of the explanation, because even today not all cyber incidents are reported and the figures therefore show a degree of 'underreporting'. So the problem is many times bigger than what these halucinating figures already show. This is also confirmed by the Dutch 'Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) : "According to the Security Monitor 2021 of the CBS, 17 percent of Dutch people aged 15 years or older had to deal with cybercrime. We are talking about 2.5 million Dutch people. In all likelihood that is only the tip of the iceberg: CBS calculations show that only one in five victims reports it to the police."
Yet also a glimmer of hope from the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (OM): "The number of identified suspects of cybercrimes increased in one year from 481 to 574, an increase of 21 percent. In two years, the number of identified suspects increased by 47 percent."
While it remains very limited in number...we still think it's a hopeful trend that concrete perpetrators are being identified more often.
